Yesterday
Yesterday, someone asked me how much longer I was going to be reading DQ. I thought it was an odd question. I have about 300 more pages left to read. I’m not rushing. I like to wander in the episodes (and the book is very episodic) and I spend quite a bit of time thinking about Don Quixote and Sancho after I read an episode. I don’t have a plan. Maybe I’m a slow reader. Maybe I’m a hoarder. Some people seem to judge a book’s quality by how fast they read it. “It’s a page-turner”. DQ is a page turner. I just don’t turn the pages very quickly! That might be why my copy of the book is getting so messed up.

I know someone who carried a short novel around for years to maintain a rapport with the characters and the author in his mind. I'm hoarding My Guru and His Disciple for that reason! I pored through the first chapters (which is unusual for me because I am a slow reader) then put on the brakes before the last chapter just to keep it current - so it's been current reading for years. To go a little further in this, I'm studying ayurveda with books and read the first course manual in two sittings, but it requires time to experience the material in everyday life and in order to digest it, a student should be able to tell it back in her own words. The progress is a conversation. But it looks like a monologue if there's no one around who wants to talk about it too...
There is a degree of comfort involved. I find I turn to DQ when I'm stressed or tired or just want some privacy. I have some confidence in what I will find there...
